Mining Security (also called Protection Services) handles the securing of the access points of the mine. They make sure that there is enough data to record the movement of personnel, vehicles, and assets. Protection Services also ensure the safety of mine employees from riots, incursions and terrorism. They can arrest and detain personnel suspected of criminal activity on the site.
Mining security companies are embedded within the site operations. They offer the services to ensure a safe environment for employees and contractors.
Mining Infrastructure can be split into two parts:
Physical Infrastructure can include access points (turnstiles, gates, or doors), vehicles, and assets (winches, hoists, elevators, mills, electrical systems, generators, HVAC, water treatment systems, or plant equipment).
Data Infrastructure can include personnel credentials, reports, data hosting, CRM systems, workforce management solutions, process systems, asset management dashboards, production schedules, and maintenance solutions to ensure efficient operation of the mine.
To secure a mine, you need to secure the perimeter of the site. Any entry and exit through the perimeter wall or barrier needs to be secured as well. In some cases, motion detection solutions create a 'virtual wall' hundreds of meters before the physical barrier.
Physical barriers are secured with padlocks and keys (mechanical or electromechanical). Facial recognition, biometrics, pin codes, RFID readers (key or badge), or NFC/Bluetooth (through app or device) can also be used. Sites are divided so that the area covered is manageable. Funneling of foot and vehicle traffic enables greater control and transparency of movement.
Mine safety consultants provide a SHEQ risk assessment. It includes ingress and egress product/solution recommendations. This defines the quantity of access points and physical barriers. The safe flow of foot and vehicle traffic on the site is considered. The safe evacuation of site employees in the event of an emergency is also important.
